The ocean, 100 million years ago

Tiny plankton live, die, and sink to the seafloor. Layer after layer of mud buries them deep. Nothing is wasted — just buried.

That's the whole trick of synthetic materials: nothing new is summoned — something old is rearranged. Oil becomes plastic, sand becomes glass, ore becomes steel, trees become rayon. The resources are natural. The arrangement is us.

Synthetic = natural + a process

Natural materials come basically ready — wood, cotton, wool, stone. Synthetic materials are made by people from natural resources — nylon from oil, glass from sand. Some are sneaky. Sort them.

Structure decides function

A monomer is one bead. A polymer is the chain. Link monomers together (polymerization) and the material's personality changes with the chain: longer and crosslinked means tougher. Build a chain and watch it grow a personality.

PET bottles, nylon jackets, polyethylene bags, PVC pipes — all chains, different beads. crosslink the chains (tie them sideways, like vulcanized rubber) and it gets tougher still.

What synthetics give — and cost

The give

Medicine — sterile syringes, IV bags, cheap gloves. Plastics made modern medicine affordable.
Food — sealed packaging means less spoilage, safer shipping, fewer hungry weeks.
Light & cheap — a nylon jacket weighs ounces and outlives a decade of washes.

The cost

Persistence — most plastic refuses to biodegrade. Centuries for one bottlecap.
Microplastics — it doesn't leave, it just gets smaller. Found on Everest and in the deep sea.
Oil dependency — feedstock and fuel, spent every time we make another disposable.

The next move

Know the number — the triangle code 1–7 tells the recycling plant what it's holding. #1 PET and #2 HDPE recycle best.
Refuse first — the greenest plastic is the one never made. Reuse beats recycle beats landfill.
Bio-based options — plastics grown from corn or algae. Same chains, different feedstock.
